Jaimala and Palli Pallo

After the Paon Dhulai ceremony, the bride and groom exchange garlands. The bride's sister takes the edge of the bride's headscarf and ties in a knot with the groom's clothes.

Hathailo

The right hands of the bride and groom are tied with a red scarf, and they pray to god to start anew. 

Kanyadaan

After this ceremony, the bride's father officially gives her daughter to the groom. He pours holy water over the joined hands of the couples. 

Phera

The couple takes the phera in front of a sacred fire, a witness, as per Hindu tradition. After reciting the Vedic mantras, the priest pours an offering to the fire, asking the couple to stand up and take four rounds. 

The bride takes the first three rounds, and the groom takes the last round. With each round, the couples are reminded of their four duties of life—Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. The priest also recites the sacred vows. 

Saptapadi

Seven piles of rice are placed in front of the couple, representing the future difficulties. The bride, along with the groom, step on these seven piles, signifying that they will face every challenge together.

Sindhi Pre-Wedding Rituals That You Should Know

Sindhi wedding is an example of a big fat Indian wedding. The celebrations involve music and songs to ensure the couple starts their new life with joy and happiness. Sindhi Wedding Rituals 

Kachhi Misri

The two families meet each other for the first time. They exchange gifts, and the to-be-married couple exchange misri and coconuts. This informal engagement helps the couple to know each other properly. The groom’s sister drapes a dupatta over the bride’s head and keeps five different types of food on her lap. She feeds sweets to the bride, welcoming the bride informally to the new family. 

Pakki Misri 

The groom’s mother presents a pot filled with misri to the bride’s mother. She opens it in front of everyone. Then, seven married women help the mother to draw a picture of lord Ganesha to mark the beginning of this auspicious occasion. The priest does the pooja while the couple exchanges rings. 

A red saree is draped on the bride’s head, which she wears on her wedding day. The priest also looks at the couple's horoscope and the families exchanging sweets. 

And the Sindhi Wedding ritual begins. 

What are the pre-wedding functions?

Berana Satsang

It is a prayer to the almighty to bless the couple. The family sings a traditional song. The brother-in-law becomes the bride's guardian. 

The same kind of ceremony takes place at the groom’s house. 

Dev Bithana

A stone grinder is placed in the couple's house, and puja is offered to the grinder. This ceremony takes place five days before the wedding. 

After the ceremony, the couple does not leave their houses until the wedding. 

Lada and Tih

A sangeet is hosted at the groom’s place, where all the family members sing traditional songs. 

The priest from the bride’s family visits the groom’s house to offer puja to the deity (stone grinder). The priest presents rice, spices, a ball of green silk yarn, sugar, coconut, 21 sweets, and nine dates. The priest carries a lagna chart and does Ganesh puja at the groom’s house with the above items. 

Vanvas

Women put haldi paste on the bride, and the seven married women pour oil over the bride’s head. Then, she cleanses it off. The same ceremony happens at the groom’s house. 

Now imagine the groom’s clothes are torn off by his loved ones after the bath. Yes! This ceremony happens at his place, symbolizing he is leaving his bachelor life behind. 

Mehendi

The bride’s family gather at the house and puts henna on the hands, followed by music and celebrations. 

Navagrahi Puja

Both families perform puja to the nine planets and the deities in their houses. The significance of this ceremony is to invite the gods and seek blessings for the to-be-married couple. The wheat grain is offered to the families, and the women in their houses grind the wheat flour. 

The to-be-married couple breaks the earthen lamps at their homes.
